Australian Avionics secures EASA Approval

25th September 2005

Following market research and discussions with operators of European registered aircraft, it became apparent that there were excellent opportunities for securing new business, particularly in the Pacific region and Asia. However before any work could be undertaken for those operators, Hawker Pacific would first need to hold certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

It was decided that we would apply for EASA certification for aircraft and component maintenance for our new Cairns facility (Australian Avionics and Hawker Pacific MRO) and for Archerfield.

After a substantial effort from our Cairns, Archerfield and Head Office teams in developing and documenting our systems, an application was submitted to EASA.

The French Authority was assigned to our application and in September, two inspectors from France (Messrs Jean Yves Repussard & Laurent Germain) conducted comprehensive audits of our facilities. The audits resulted in a recommendation that we be awarded an EASA Part 145 Certificate.

In October, Jim Pilkington received the Certificate from EASA while in Cologne as a member of a CASA/Industry team. It is the first Part 145 Certificate in Australia that is not an upgrade/conversion from a JAA Certificate and it will allow Hawker Pacific to compete internationally for MRO and Avionics related services.

Current Status

Work has recently been completed at our new Cairns facility on the first aircraft under our EASA Part 145 approval. This was a Twin Otter for Aircalin of Noumea and involved a wing box change, complete interior replacement and avionics upgrades. The customer was extremely happy with the quality and on time delivery.

It is planned to add Singapore to our EASA Certificate during 2006.

There is little doubt that EASA certification will not only cement Hawker Pacific’s leadership position in the region but also open up new markets to us.

Jim Pilkington.
